John Sowers Obituary

John R. Sowers, 79, passed away in the hospital on February 13th, 2026. John was born April 1st, 1946, in Bloomingdale, Parke County, Indiana, the son of Charlie & Ina Mae (Cooper) Sowers.

John graduated from Montezuma High School, Class of 1964. Following graduation, John attended Indiana State University where he went on to obtain his master’s degree in teaching. John married his high school sweetheart, Phyllis Ann Rennick at the Presbyterian Church in Montezuma, Indiana. They shared 58 years of marriage. Shortly after graduating from ISU, John was drafted into the United States Army in 1967. He truly loved serving and fought in the Vietnam War. He loved every aspect of the service and absolutely loved veterans, comrades, friends, and family. When returning from his military service, John began his teaching career. He taught building trades at several different high schools in the area, always enjoying interacting and teaching the youth in his class.

John was an active member of the Masonic Masons and obtained his 50-year membership. He was an active member of the American Legion, VFW, and the Amvets in Rockville.

John was preceded in death by his parents, wife, and brother David Sowers.

Surviving are his sons, Aaron Sowers of Clinton, and Kreg (Tessa) Sowers of Universal, grandchildren, Austin, Kalvin, and Lindsey Sowers and many nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be at Brown Back Funeral Home in Montezuma, IN., on Sunday February 22. 2026 from 1:00 p.m. – 2:00 p.m. Service of remembrance at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. Craig Belser officiating. Cremation will follow. Military honors and Masonic Service will be provided at the time of cremains burial at Oakland Cemetery in Montezuma.
